Questions You May Already HaveHow can Sunny Ridge help me? Sunny Ridge is a nonprofit agency, open to people of all religions, ethnicities, backgrounds and family composition. Since 1979, Sunny Ridge has placed over 3,000 children with adoptive families. Why would I consider adoption for
my baby?
What about financial assistance while I am pregnant? Sunny Ridge will assist you with options for medical coverage. We may also be able to help you with some living expenses while you are pregnant. What is an “open adoption”? Can I meet the adoptive parents? An open adoption allows for an ongoing relationship among the birth family, adoptive family, and adoptee. You can meet the adoptive parents before the adoption, and discuss your future relationship with them and the child. The amount of communication and openness between birth and adoptive parents is built on trust and is mutually agreed upon. Presents, pictures, and communication can be exchanged either directly with the adoptive parents or through Sunny Ridge. Our professional staff remains committed to helping the line of communication stay open in the future, long after the adoption is finalized. However, if you prefer, closed, confidential adoptions are also possible. How can I feel confident about the family I select? Sunny Ridge is state licensed, and personally conducts extensive home studies for all families hoping to adopt a child. You can also get to know the family during your pregnancy if you wish. Am I allowed to spend time with my baby at the hospital? Yes, if you choose, you can hold, name, and care for your baby at the hospital. When do I have to make a decision? Illinois law requires that you wait at least 72 hours after delivery before making a final decision to choose adoption. Of course, you may take more time if you wish. Once the legal documents are signed, your decision is permanent. Does Sunny Ridge stay involved? Sunny Ridge staff visits the adoptive family for six months after the adoption and continues to have contact with you if you wish. In addition, you are invited to attend our support group for birth parents and birth grandparents. We can also work with your extended family members and other important people in your life. Does a birth father have rights? In Illinois, both birth parents have rights concerning their child. Sunny Ridge can work with you regardless of your relationship with the birth father.
