After the Adoption
So your life has been touched by adoption. However you may not realize that the adoption journey doesn’t end as the finalization papers are stamped by the judge. In fact, it’s just the beginning. Whether your family was formed through a domestic infant adoption, an intercountry adoption, or an older child foster care adoption, the journey is different than if you gave birth to your child.
As if being a parent weren’t difficult enough! Often times the additional “layer” of adoption must be considered. Issues such as attachment, behavioral issues, questions from your child, questions from extended family and the community—all will, at some point, need to be handled. The trouble is, often times the layers of adoption are complex and complicated to sift through.
After the adoption, some families may start to feel the impact of being different as soon as their child starts school. Others don’t face questions or concerns until their child is a teenager. And some adoptees may not begin to question their past until they are adults and starting families of their own. No matter where you are in your journey, Sunny Ridge Family Center is here to assist you and your family after the adoption.
